Coppa: Mirko sends Roma through

Mirko Vucinic needed a late brace to get past plucky Bologna, so Roma will face either Inter or Genoa in the quarter-final.

This was the seventh Coppa meeting between these sides, but Bologna hadn't lost one of these fixtures since 1968. Vincenzo Montella got a rare start, but the line-up was otherwise solid, missing the injured Alexander Doni and Juan.

Montella thought he had opened the scoring after 11 minutes when he ran forward, cut back to commit the defender and placed the ball with the inside of his left foot, but it incredibly swung wide! Another veteran threatened for Bologna moments later, Massimo Marazzina's snapshot stinging Artur's palms.

Jeremy Menez and Julio Baptista combined, but the Frenchman's finish was neither a shot nor a pass for Montella, so the chance went begging. Cicinho wasted a good opportunity with his weaker foot, while Carrus fired well over from distance.

Menez brought a great save out of Colombo, skipping past Luigi Lavecchia down the left and his fierce angled drive was beaten away with some difficulty. Colombo got down well to parry a deflected Marco Cassetti strike from 25 metres, but Rodriguez was given acres of space to drill over from the edge of the box.

Cicinho was having a poor game and he again blasted high and wide with his left foot as a free kick was floated in. He had bad memories of Bologna, as his stoppage-time own goal decided the 1-1 draw earlier this season. Bologna had a fantastic chance in first half stoppages, as Cesar smacked a powerful and precise strike that brought a desperate save out of Artur.

Daniele De Rossi was off target after the restart and Baptista's free kick was over. Probably the best chance of the game so far was created by Philippe Mexes, who ran forward from his own area and threaded through for Baptista, bringing a great reaction save out of Colombo.

Mirko Vucinic came off the bench and almost scored with his first touch, at full stretch to tip Baptista's cross towards the goalkeeper. Marchini was fortunate to avoid a penaly, as he brought down Menez right on the edge of the area.
